Man seeking mental health help

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and United Way of Central Minnesota is dedicated to bringing attention to the impact of mental illnesses. These conditions can have far-reaching consequences that can affect anyone in our community — regardless of age, wealth, or gender.

Mental health is a crucial issue in our community, and United Way strives to create a stigma-free environment where seeking help is encouraged and supported. By removing barriers and challenging stereotypes, we can build a world where everyone receives the care and support they need for their mental well-being.

Join UWCM this May in prioritizing mental health and increasing understanding of this important issue. United, we can make a positive difference and create a community where everyone feels valued and supported.

Understanding the Stigma Around Mental Health

Stigma surrounding mental health can have profound effects on individuals, leading to feelings of shame, blame, hopelessness, and distress. This harmful stigma is often perpetuated through misrepresentation in the media and can create barriers for those in need of support.

One of the most concerning consequences of mental health stigma is its impact on help-seeking behaviors. Many individuals who could benefit from treatment are deterred from seeking help due to the fear of judgment and discrimination.

Statistic about mental health stigma from American Psychiatric Association

Although United Way of Central Minnesota aims to foster inclusivity and understanding, we acknowledge that there are still misconceptions and hesitations within the community. According to a study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior:

  • 38% of community members express reluctance to live next door to someone with mental illness.
  • 56% hesitate to socialize with individuals experiencing mental illness.
  • 33% are resistant to forming friendships with those affected by mental illness.
  • 58% prefer not to work closely with someone who has a mental illness.
  • 68% express reluctance toward having a family member with mental illness marry into their family.

These statistics highlight the work that still needs to be done to break down barriers and create a more inclusive and accepting society. At UWCM, we are dedicated to challenging these attitudes and fostering a community where everyone feels valued and supported, regardless of their mental health.

Why Mental Health Awareness Month Matters

Raising awareness about mental health plays a crucial role in dismantling the stigma surrounding mental illness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers valuable suggestions to actively reduce stigma and foster understanding within your own community:

  • Start open conversations about mental health, including sharing on social media.
  • Educate yourself and others by dispelling misconceptions and sharing personal experiences and facts.
  • Be mindful of the language you use, remember that words have an impact.
  • Foster equality by highlighting the importance of treating mental illness with the same compassion as physical conditions like cancer or diabetes.
  • Show empathy and understanding towards individuals with mental illness.
  • Normalize mental health treatment by being open and honest about it, just like any other form of healthcare.

Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a powerful platform for breaking down the stigma surrounding mental illness. By raising awareness and implementing the suggestions provided above, we all can actively contribute to fostering understanding and support within Central Minnesota.
