you plan to make a charitable gift by will, please think it through carefully. Then, meet with your attorney to discuss and update your will. Tell him or her exactly what you want to do. Be as clear as possible in describing what you want given to whom.

Sample language for gifts by will

Gift of cash

"I give the sum of $___________ to United Way of Central Minnesota, Inc.."

Gift of Property

"I give [land/securities/description of other property] to United Way of Central Minnesota, Inc.  (Legal description of any land should be set forth immediately below)

Gift of a percent of the estate

"I give _____% of all of the rest of my property of whatever kind and wherever located to United Way of Central Minnesota, Inc."

Contingent Gift

"I give _____% of all of the rest of my property of whatever kind and wherever located to my brother, John Doe, if he survives me, or if he does not survive me, to United Way of Central Minnesota, Inc.

Gift to be added to the United Way's Granite Fund held at Central Minnesota Community Foundation

"I give [sum/land/securities/description of other property] to Central Minnesota Community Foundation, Inc., located at St. Cloud, Minnesota to be added to the Granite Fund held for the benefit of United Way of Central Minnesota, Inc.  (legal description of any land should be set forth immediately below)

If your will is already written, you can add a gift to the United Way of Central Minnesota through a simple codicil (amendment) without having to write a completely new document.
