Day of Caring
Written By: Libbi Luther
"Had it not been for the Day of Caring, things would have been so much worse for us." This is how Mike responded when asked how he felt about United Way of Central Minnesota's Day of Caring.
As a result of his struggle with cancer, Mike did not have the funds or physical strength to tear down his deteriorating garage. He was able to have this project completed through the 2003 Fall Day of Caring.
Day of Caring is a one-day event organized by United Way of Central Minnestoa that links businesses in our community that allow employees to volunteer their time, talents, and resources to help meet the needs of others in this community.
An employee of the American Cancer Society had been in contact with Mike and knew how badly he and his wife needed to have their garage torn down. She submitted the project to United Way of Central Minnesota through their help she was able to link Mike's Day of Caring project with Landwehr Construction Inc. and Henekmeyer Landfill.
These two companies were able to finish this huge project in one day. According to Mike they went "above and beyond my expectations" and "treated this job as if they were being paid." Mike also said this experience has "renewed his confidence that there are some sincere and caring people in this community."
Mike is now back to work and is gaining his strength back. Mike feels that the Day of Caring has "given him a whole new heart for being a part of the community." He was able to receive the assistance he needed because of the caring power in this community, and plans on giving back by volunteering to help in future Days of Caring.
